Yes, I’ve always weighed about 20 lbs. too much. Sometimes it’s been a bigger 20 lbs. than other times, but I’ve never been thin. I’ve tried many of the diets out there, and not one has ever really made a difference. As my 50th birthday approaches this September, I’d like to use that as an excuse for this fight with my hips. But I know better.
So I’ve decided to try my own diet. The 50-mile diet. I might lose weight, but I might not. It’s not about weight loss. It’s about community gain. Can I eat healthy and local? My motivation is what Barbara Kingsolver calls knowing the “provenance” of the food one eats. I am going to know where my food is grown or raised. And I am going to only eat foods raised or grown within a fifty-mile radius of my house. For one month. If I can.
I know already there will be exceptions — coffee and a trip to Vermont are already looming as exceptions. But that’s okay. I can try.

Jody,
Comment by sally July 26, 2007 @ 7:52 pmBest of luck to you. I am reading the same book. We also joined a CSA, community supported agriculture, and we get food from the farm once a week. It is very fun.

This had better not interfere with our coffee dates.
