The 50 Mile Diet

Under Wrap

With the strict 50-mile rules behind me, I am falling a bit off the proverbial “wagon” (tractor perhaps?). Today I ate a wrap. I peered into it. I saw some green stuff, red stuff, more green stuff — I have no idea what it was, but I’m guessing California avocado, California tomato, and California lettuce. Good guess. My first west coast food since August. Sigh. It was even tasty.

Next to the wraps was a bowlful of assorted chips. Very wrapped. I’m not a fan of bagged chips, so I just settled in with my wrap. There were bottles of water and cans of soda. I passed on that too. How did we get to be this society? Generous and plentiful, but not environmental. I am appreciative of a good free lunch, really.

But I am also curious about how convenience has eroded inexpensive, healthy and environmentally friendly. Maybe I don’t have this quite right, but the ease of grabbing that bottle of water and tossing it into the bin afterwards is sure easier than remembering to fill the Nalgene bottle with water and ice and carrying it along. But why not. Little things. Big differences.

My wine rack has been transformed…..

Might as well; that bottle of chianti won’t fit.
