Have you ever heard of a place called "Traditional Foods"? It is a hole-in-the-wall warehouse type place that sells food directly from local farmers. They have fantastic pork and chicken along with many other farmers market type of things. They have a tiny bit of fresh vegetables/fruits once in a while. I usually make a weekly trip for meats. Here is a link to their website:

so sorry to hear about the lettuce. you won't like to hear this but...i have harvested several meals of spinach from my garden and just harvested all of the swiss chard for last night's dinner. it is sooooo yummy. i'm going to pull the spinach and chard roots and replant with carrot seeds for a fall harvest. i LOVE my new raised garden bed---no rabbits! still waiting for tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, yellow beans, broccoli, and peas. good luck!

Cool! I signed up for 2 CSAs this year, one veggie, one meat and egg. Picked up my first batch of the latter this weekend; haven't tried the eggs yet, although they sure are purdy.

I must remember to check the size of the meat portions, though--there's fajita-cut beef, but the amount I got is about enough to feed one teenage boy. :-) I'll have to buy some extra next time.

Another great way to fix asparagus is to stir fry it with garlic and ginger. Slice the tougher part of the stalk a little thinner. Dice garlic and ginger. Heat oil until almost smoking in a non-stick wok. Add garlic and ginger and stir fry for 30 seconds. Add asparagus (dry asparagus well with a paper towel before adding) and stir fry for 2 - 3 minutes more. Add a couple of tablespoons of soy sauce, stir, and turn off heat. Delicious!

If you add a little heavy cream to the soup at the end it will have less of a green pea soup look (and of course have a smoother mouth feel and taste great!).

When I was a kid, my dad picked wild asparagus that grew on the sides of ditches and ravines in southwestern Minnesota. These spots were a fiercely guarded secret by those who went spring asparagus hunting. Anyone know of a "secret" spot???

i just read that cayanne pepper will keep the bunnies away?
i just had a salad table built (cost way more than $100 but worth it to have someone else build us a good one that we can use for many years) and it requires ALOT of watering!! Especially as it is getting hotter with many days without rain!

Yes, great idea. I am finally going to be able to garden this summer. We cut down a couple of trees in our backyard last fall so we now have a nice sunny spot. I am going to install a raised garden bed since the area is full of roots from a maple tree. I can also control the quality of the soil and I don't have to bend over so far! Any ideas of how to keep rabbits out of this type of garden?

It's great to conserve by not using grocery store plastic bags...But I have a dilemma. I must dispose of my wet garbage in plastic bags in order for it to be picked up. If I don't use store bags I will be forced to buy plastic bags!

I'll be curious to know, if you build one, how much watering your greens need, given the shallow box and mesh bottom.

Yes, there is nothing like real maple syrup. I could have made my own syrup this spring from a silver maple in my front yard. I had some trim work done last fall. The sap has been "raining" from one of the cut limbs for the past three weeks. I had no idea maple trees sucked this much water from the ground and produce that much sap! Hopefully it will heal itself soon.

I just had this at a cheese tasting for Wisconsin cheeses. I am a chef so they are trying to sell me a bunch of cheeses. This, along with the German-style blues, were the standouts. It is a very nice cheese. Leagues above the generic american "swiss" and comparable to many real Swiss gruyeres i've had.
